Updated: Apr 13

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is gearing to launch. As the smoke billows—trepidation abounds, feelings are strong, and opinions are entrenched. So what’s a healthcare-dependent populous to do? Predictably, Zinc has ideas. Ones rooted in pragmatism and bent on finding the road to higher ground.

Life is 90% Altitude

Do you accept the maxim that life is 10% what happens and 90% how we react? We do. Why? Because it’s empowering. And likely if we mastered the skill we’d be healthier, happier, wiser, and well on our way to rising above the divisive rhetoric pulsing around just about everything these days. So we say: If life hands you lemons—saw them in half, twist the pulp out of ‘em, and enjoy some lemonade already! Or something.

Lemony Snippet

Here’s an affordable fresh-squeezed overview: March 23, 2010 saw the PPACA signed into law. Beginning then, a multi-year plan was put into effect to overhaul, standardize, and centralize the healthcare and health insurance industries. According to Healthcare.gov: inclusion, protection, and increased selection are a few of the new law’s major tenets; healthcare for more people, at lower costs, with less restrictions, and with hopes of diminishing problematic areas. Time will tell.

For better or worse, the shift from theory to real-world unfolds as the Health Insurance Marketplace commences. Basically a one-stop shop for health insurance, the Marketplace will allow individuals, families, and small businesses to view options regarding healthcare, insurance, and physician choice, whether currently covered or not, and make their respective choices.

While effort has been made to simplify the process, with so much information centralized, it will take some time to investigate. We jotted down some simple action items to help allot and use that time efficiently:

  1. Set aside 15 minutes to window-shop and get a feel for what’s in the store.

  2. Buy out an hour to take a closer look, notate possible choices, questions, etc.

  3. Make an appointment with us to consult, consider variables, ramifications, to clarify...

From there you’ll be in the position to more confidently make an informed choice.
